Carbon Passport only buys Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). We have a preference for carbon credits from renewable energy, landfill gas and energy efficiency projects.
We currently hold a stock of CERs from the BK Energia Itacoatiara Project which is described below:
BK Energia Itacoatiara
Itacoatiara is a 9MW power plant that produces renewable electricity using waste wood from a wood processing plant in the Amazonas region of Brazil.
The 9MW of generation displaces the output from several diesel generators in a region which previously had 100% reliance on polluting diesel generation. The use of waste wood in the power plant also reduces methane emissions from waste wood which was previously left to rot.
A further benefit of the project, in addition to the greenhouse gas reductions, is that it helps to preserve around 1660 square miles of Amazon rainforest. The forest is sustainably managed and FSC certified. No more than 5 trees per hectare are harvested every 25 years and low impact logging techniques are used to preserve the surrounding flora and forest canopy. Approximately 25% of the forest surface is set aside as absolute preservation areas and access to the forest is controlled to prevent illegal deforestation, hunting of endangered species and fire outbreaks.
Further details of the project can be found in the following documents:
